What You Need to Know About Water Filtration and Alkaline Water

glass of water
Unfortunately, for most people, the water coming into their house is not the healthiest thing for drinking or bathing. Municipal water companies add a lot of chlorine to ensure there are no bacteria in the water. Well water may be contaminated with all kinds of minerals and may even have bacteria growing in it.
While many people have changed to drinking bottled water, this may not be the best thing either. Most bottled water has been stripped of all minerals. While there are some you do not want to be drinking, such as nitrates, sulfates, and mercury, there are a couple that are good for you, like calcium and magnesium.
This creates a conundrum. You can either drink water from the tap that has added chlorine — or possibly nitrates and mercury — or drink bottled water which is void of important nutrients. This does not even get into water used for cooking, laundering, and bathing. All the water you use in your home needs to be of good quality. Here are some things to think about so you make the right choice for your water.

Filtration

The first thing you need to do is to make sure that any water coming into your house is clean and sanitary. This means it needs to have undergone a filtration process. Municipal water companies exist to ensure that the water people are drinking is not harboring bacteria that can lead to serious illness or death. However, they achieve this by adding chlorine to the water, which may not be the best option for your health.
For your home, you can have a whole house filtration system installed. While filtering only the water in the kitchen sink is an option, it still leaves room for quite a bit of bad water. When you take a shower, the hot water opens your pores, allowing your skin to absorb any chlorine or other contaminants. These contaminants can make you just as ill as if you drank them.
Reverse osmosis is one of the best and safest ways to filter water. It uses a process called nana-filtration to remove 95 to 98 percent of all particles in the water. However, just as with bottled water, this means that it removes all the good minerals too. While this is fine for bathing and laundering, it is not good enough for what you drink.

Alkaline Water

Many people find that drinking water that has a higher pH is better for them. This could be due to the fact that today’s food is more processed than before, so the natural pH of your body is constantly changing. Often this results in your body’s pH becoming more acidic. Drinking alkaline water can help offset all the acidity to keep your body healthy.
However, any bottled or filtered water will have a pH of 7, which is neutral. To make the water more alkaline, it needs to have some minerals in it that can be ionized. It is the ionization that changes the pH.
To make your reverse osmosis water alkaline involves a two-part process. First, you need to have a remineralization cartridge in the water line after the filter. This should be placed in the water line under the kitchen sink or before any water dispenser that is connected to the water supply.
The next step is to ionize the water. An ionizer unit needs to be placed between the remineralization cartridge and the faucet. Once these two additions are in place you will have healthy alkaline water for drinking and cooking.
